POD tank tops: $20 price, $3 actual margin
Tank tops are the price-floor product in POD apparel — the cheapest blank, the most aggressive Etsy competition, and the same fee structure as a $60 jacket. The result is predictable: a category where the seller's margin is in the low single digits after Off-Site Ads attribution, and where most shops eventually pivot away.
A $20 POD tank top sale, fully decomposed
$20 tank + $4.50 shipping = $24.50 gross. Printify supplier cost $11 (Bella + Canvas 3480, plus print), real shipping $4.50. Etsy fees on the gross:
- Listing fee: $0.20
- Transaction fee (6.5% of $24.50): $1.59
- Payment processing (3% + $0.25): $0.99
- Off-Site Ads at 15%: $3.68
Etsy total: $6.46 — 26.4% of gross. After supplier cost and shipping: net profit is $24.50 − $11 − $4.50 − $6.46 = $2.54 — 10.4% net margin on the buyer-facing total.
The kicker: that $2.54 is before any returns, lost-package replacements, or chargebacks. Real-world tank top sellers report 5–7% effective net margin after a year of real-world friction.
The common mistake: assuming volume fixes the math
A $2.54 net per sale means 400 sales/month to clear $1,000. That's 13 orders a day. POD tank tops do not naturally produce that volume for new sellers — and at that volume the customer service load eats the seller's time too. The math doesn't scale on tank tops alone.
The shops that work in POD apparel use tank tops as a lead-in product to a broader bundle. A $20 tank that converts a buyer into the shop is fine if that buyer also picks up a $42 hoodie or a $48 crewneck on the same order. AOV is the entire game.
How to fix it
- Tank tops as a bundle anchor, not a standalone. "Tank + matching hat" or "tank + summer hoodie set" lifts AOV materially. The fee math on a $58 bundled order is dramatically better than two separate $20 orders.
- Don't price under $22. Below that, you're racing to the bottom. The buyer who refuses $22 wasn't going to buy at $20 either.
- Premium blank for higher tier. A $14 Comfort Colors tank with retro-style print sells at $32 and clears 4× the per-unit margin. Same fee structure, dramatically better unit economics.
- Opt out of Off-Site Ads under $10k. Required at this price point. The 15% attribution wipes out 70% of your margin.
- Off-Etsy: Shopify + organic Instagram. Tank top buyers are heavily Instagram-discovered. A Shopify store driven by IG content keeps the full margin. Etsy is the discovery layer; the long-term shop should live elsewhere.
