Digital stickers: planner culture, sub-$5 price points
GoodNotes and Notability digital planner stickers are a thriving sub-niche of the digital planner ecosystem — but a thriving niche doesn't mean thriving unit economics. Single sticker packs typically sell at $3–6, which is the worst price band on Etsy from a fee-structure standpoint. Flat fees dominate, percentage fees stack on top, and Off-Site Ads can attribute the sale at 15% on top of everything. Bundle aggressively or watch margin disappear.
A $4 digital sticker pack sale, fully decomposed
$4 pack, no shipping, no cost of goods. Etsy fees:
- Listing fee: $0.20
- Transaction fee (6.5% of $4): $0.26
- Payment processing (3% + $0.25): $0.37
- Off-Site Ads at 15%: $0.60
Baseline: $0.83 — 20.8% of revenue. With Off-Site Ads: $1.43 — 35.8% of revenue. Net profit: $3.17 baseline, $2.57 with Off-Site Ads.
A 35.8% effective fee rate is among the worst on Etsy. The flat fees ($0.45) consume 11.25% of revenue before any percentage fee — a structural tax that wages a quiet war against your margin. The seller working at this price point is doing $4 in gross revenue and keeping $2.57. That's not a sustainable shape for a business.
The common mistake: themed singles instead of mega-bundles
Most digital sticker shops list 20–50 individual sticker packs at $3–5 each. Each sale clears under $3 after fees. To replace a $1,500/month part-time income you need 500+ orders. That's untenable.
The shops that work flip the structure entirely: a single $20 "mega bundle" containing 1,500+ stickers across every theme. The buyer who would have bought a single $4 pack instead buys the mega bundle, the AOV is 5×, and the flat-fee tax becomes 2.25% of revenue instead of 11.25%. Better for the buyer (they get everything), better for the seller (the fee math finally works).
How to fix it
- Mega-bundle is the only viable format. $20–32 for 1,000+ stickers across themes. Singles are upsells inside the listing, not standalone products.
- Seasonal themed packs as add-ons. A $4 "Halloween sticker pack" inside an existing bundle relationship is fine. A standalone $4 listing is not.
- Opt out of Off-Site Ads under $10k. This is non-negotiable in this category. The 15% attribution on $4 sales is destruction.
- Free starter pack as lead magnet. A genuinely useful 50-sticker free pack drives email signups and Instagram follows that compound off-Etsy.
- GoodNotes 6 + Notability 14 + ZoomNotes coverage. Listing format compatibility explicitly converts 2× better than "digital planner sticker" alone. Buyers want to know it works in their app.
- Subscription off-Etsy. A $5/month "new pack monthly" model on Gumroad or a Patreon tier keeps recurring revenue at 100% margin. Etsy is the discovery layer; the recurring revenue lives elsewhere.
