Lip balm: 3-packs are the only viable price point
Single lip balm tubes are unsellable on Etsy after fees. The ingredient cost is genuinely trivial (~$0.40 per tube — beeswax, carrier oil, essential oil, tube), but a $4 single-tube listing pays $0.45 in flat fees alone (11% of revenue) before any percentage-based fee. After Off-Site Ads, the seller keeps roughly $1.50 per single-tube order. Bundle aggressively or operate at a structural loss. The category has effectively standardized around 3-packs and 6-packs for a reason.
A $14 lip balm 3-pack sale, fully decomposed
$14 3-pack + $4 shipping = $18 gross. Tubes $1.20 (3 × $0.40), packaging $1.50, label $0.30, real shipping $3.75. Total cost ~$6.75. Etsy fees on the gross:
- Listing fee: $0.20
- Transaction fee (6.5% of $18): $1.17
- Payment processing (3% + $0.25): $0.79
- Off-Site Ads at 15%: $2.70
Etsy total: $4.86 — 27% of gross. After cost of goods and shipping: net profit is $18 − $6.75 − $4.86 = $6.39 — about 35.5% net margin on the buyer-facing total.
Compared to a $4 single-tube sale: same flat fees ($0.45), but spread across 3.5× the revenue. Effective fee rate drops from a catastrophic 40%+ on a single-tube sale to a viable 27% on a 3-pack. The bundle is the entire business model.
The common mistake: launching with single tubes
New lip balm makers often launch with a $4–6 single tube as their flagship SKU. The math destroys them in the first 50 orders. By the time they pivot to bundles, they've already trained their buyer base to expect singles.
The other failure: not investing in tube design. A $14 3-pack with a generic Avery label converts at a fraction of the rate of a $14 3-pack with branded shrink-sleeve tubes. The design cost is real but the long-term conversion lift is bigger.
How to fix it
- 3-pack as the flagship SKU. Always. Singles can exist as $5 add-ons inside the listing, but the headline product is the bundle.
- Flavor variety packs. A 3-pack with three different flavors (mint, vanilla, coconut) converts better than a 3-pack of one flavor. Buyers want to sample.
- 6-pack and 12-pack gift tiers. $28 and $52 respectively. Wedding favor and holiday gift markets buy these in volume.
- Opt out of Off-Site Ads under $10k. Required. The 15% attribution on lip balm is structural destruction.
- Wholesale to local boutiques. A 24-pack wholesale order at $2.50 each ($60) avoids the entire Etsy fee stack and is the highest-margin channel for this product.
