Business card templates on Etsy: $9 retail, $1.50 in fees
Selling editable business card templates (Canva, Photoshop, or Affinity) is a sub-niche of digital design that lives in a fragile price range. Most listings sit at $7–12, which is exactly where Etsy's fee structure does its worst work — high enough to attract Off-Site Ads attention, low enough that flat fees still hurt. The math is genuinely tight for a category with $0 cost of goods.
A $9 business card template sale, fully decomposed
$9 template, no shipping, no cost of goods. Etsy fees:
- Listing fee: $0.20
- Transaction fee (6.5% of $9): $0.59
- Payment processing (3% + $0.25): $0.52
- Off-Site Ads at 15%: $1.35
Baseline: $1.31 — 14.5% of revenue. With Off-Site Ads: $2.66 — 29.6% of revenue. Net profit (no COGS): $7.69 baseline, $6.34 with Off-Site Ads.
A 29.6% effective fee rate on a pure digital product is the structural problem. It means a 100-sale month at this price point clears $634 — and the seller has done $900 in gross transactions. Etsy retained nearly a third of that for what is, on the platform side, essentially zero marginal cost.
The common mistake: industry-generic templates
Most business card template shops list "minimalist business card," "modern business card," "elegant business card" — generic styling that any buyer in any industry might use. Conversion rates are mediocre because the buyer can't see themselves in the listing.
The shops that work segment by industry: "Real estate agent business card template," "hairstylist business card template," "lawyer business card template." Each variant is the same design effort with industry-specific imagery and copy. Search converts because the intent matches.
How to fix it
- Bundle a brand kit. $9 for one business card design is hard. $29 for a "complete brand kit" (business card + letterhead + thank-you card + social templates) flips the fee math from 29.6% effective to ~16%, and the buyer gets a more complete answer.
- Industry-specific variants. Same design, different mockup. The SEO long-tail for "real estate business card template" is materially less competitive than "business card template."
- Pair with a custom service. Offer "$9 template + $25 personalization" as a single listing. The $34 transaction has dramatically better fee math and you've effectively added a productized service.
- Opt out of Off-Site Ads under $10k. This category gets aggressively promoted in Google Shopping. The 15% attribution is worse here than in most digital niches.
- Mockups carry the listing. Buyers don't read; they look at the cover image and the first 3 mockup photos. Investing in those wins more than the template design itself.
