Bath bombs: $8 sale, $2 margin reality
Bath bombs are a textbook case of a low-price physical product getting eaten by Etsy's flat-fee structure. Baking soda, citric acid, fragrance, colorant — material cost is genuinely under $1 per bomb at small batch scale. The trap is everything else: packaging (boxes, paper, ribbon, labels) adds $1–2; shipping a fragile, slightly hygroscopic product safely costs $4–6; and the flat fees ($0.45) alone are 5–6% of an $8 sale before any percentage fee.
An $8 bath bomb sale, fully decomposed
$8 bomb + $5 shipping = $13 gross. Ingredients $0.50, packaging $0.75, fragrance pro-rated $0.50, real shipping $4.75, label $0.25, box cushioning $0.25. Total cost ~$7. Etsy fees on the gross:
- Listing fee: $0.20
- Transaction fee (6.5% of $13): $0.85
- Payment processing (3% + $0.25): $0.64
- Off-Site Ads at 15%: $1.95
Etsy total: $3.64 — 28% of gross. After cost of goods and shipping: net profit is $13 − $7 − $3.64 = $2.36 — about 18.2% net margin on the buyer-facing total.
$2.36 per sale means 425 individual orders per month to clear $1,000. That's 14 orders per day, 14 separate cushioned packages, 14 customer-service touchpoints — for a product that takes 90 seconds to make.
The common mistake: single bath bomb listings
Most bath bomb shops list individual bombs at $6–10. The math at that price point destroys the seller. The shops that work in this category exclusively sell 3-pack, 6-pack, and gift-box listings — and at $24, $42, and $58 respectively, the unit economics finally let the seller keep something meaningful.
The other failure: fragile shipping. A bath bomb that arrives cracked is a refund and a negative review. Shipping bath bombs safely requires individual sealed wrapping inside a padded box. Sellers who skip this lose 8–15% of orders to damage.
How to fix it
- 6-pack and 12-pack gift-box listings. $42 for six, $78 for twelve. The buyer wanting a "spa night" or a gift wants the set, not one bomb.
- Theme gift sets. "Mother's Day spa box," "Holiday self-care box," "New baby relaxation set." Bundles with a story command $58–98 and have dramatically better fee math.
- Wholesale to local spas / boutiques. A 24-bomb wholesale order at $4 each ($96) avoids the Etsy fee stack entirely and clears better per-unit margin than retail.
- Opt out of Off-Site Ads under $10k. Required at this price point. The 15% on an $8 sale wipes out 70% of the margin.
- Premium ingredient framing. "Phthalate-free fragrance" and "organic essential oil" in the title commands a $2–4 retail premium with no additional cost.
