Digital downloads aren't 100% margin — the flat fees see to that
There's a reason every "passive income on Etsy" guide opens with digital downloads: zero materials, zero shipping, zero packaging. Make it once, sell it forever. That part is true. What the guides leave out is that Etsy's fee stack is built around a flat $0.20 listing fee and a $0.25 payment processing flat fee that don't scale down with your sale price — and digital sellers are routinely listing items at $3 to $7.
At a $5 sale price, the flat fees alone consume 9% of revenue before any percentage fee kicks in. Add the 6.5% transaction fee and the 3% payment processing rate and you're looking at an effective fee rate north of 18% on a $5 download. That's before Off-Site Ads.
What the math actually looks like on a $5 download
The waterfall above shows it: a $5 download with no shipping cost gives Etsy $0.20 (listing), $0.33 (transaction at 6.5%), and $0.40 (payment processing at 3% + $0.25). That's $0.93 in fees on $5 of revenue — a 18.6% effective fee rate. If Off-Site Ads attribute the sale, add another $0.75 (15%) and you're at $1.68 in fees on a $5 sale. Net profit: $3.32. Margin: 66%.
Sounds fine, until you remember that digital sellers compete on volume — and at scale, that 18% (or 33%) rate compounds across thousands of orders.
The common mistake: pricing per file instead of per bundle
Most digital sellers underprice because they think "it's just a PDF — $5 feels right." Etsy's fee structure punishes this thinking. A $20 bundle (5 templates) carries the same flat fees as a $5 single template, so your effective fee rate drops from ~19% to ~10%. Every dollar above the flat-fee threshold is taxed only at the percentage rates.
How to fix it
- Bundle aggressively. A 3-pack at $14 outperforms three $5 sales on margin every single time.
- Avoid the "shipping fee" line on digital items. Etsy's transaction fee applies to shipping you charge, even on digital products.
- Opt out of Off-Site Ads while you're under $10,000. That alone can save 15% on attributed orders. Once you cross the $10,000 trailing-12-month threshold, you're enrolled mandatorily at 12% — but the fee is capped at $100 per order, so high-priced bundles get some protection.
If digital is your model, also model out SVG cut files and printable art — same flat-fee dynamics, different price ceilings.
