Canvas prints: bulky shipping, supplier squeeze
Stretched canvas prints are POD-style art products that sit in a difficult margin position on Etsy. Print suppliers (Printify, Printful, Gelato) charge $15–22 per stretched canvas at standard sizes. Shipping is genuinely expensive — these are oversized, can't-bend boxes — and the supplier often charges the seller for shipping while Etsy fees apply to the buyer-facing total. The result is a category where the seller's actual take-home is meaningfully lower than the headline gross suggests.
A $48 canvas print sale, fully decomposed
$48 canvas + $11 shipping = $59 gross. Supplier cost $18 (16×20 stretched canvas, print-on-demand), real shipping $10.50 (charged through by supplier). Total cost ~$28.50. Etsy fees on the gross:
- Listing fee: $0.20
- Transaction fee (6.5% of $59): $3.84
- Payment processing (3% + $0.25): $2.02
- Off-Site Ads at 15%: $8.85
Etsy total: $14.91 — 25.3% of gross. After supplier cost and shipping: net profit is $59 − $28.50 − $14.91 = $15.59 — about 26.4% net margin on the buyer-facing total.
At $0 labor per sale (POD fulfillment), the margin per order is the actual margin. The category lives or dies on volume and whether the supplier's quality matches the listing's promise.
The common mistake: matching mass-market canvas pricing
New canvas print sellers benchmark against Wayfair or Society6 retail ($24–38 for 16×20 prints) and price too low. The Etsy buyer searching for handmade or custom art is paying for differentiation, not price. A $58 canvas with a strong aesthetic outsells a $42 canvas of equivalent supplier quality because the price signals "real artist."
The other failure: not accounting for return rates. Canvas prints have higher return rates than most Etsy categories (5–8% vs. 1–3% for digital products) because color reproduction varies between monitor and print. Sellers who don't budget for returns operate at a smaller effective margin than they think.
How to fix it
- Price $58–88 for 16×20 canvas. This is the durable Etsy price range. Matching Wayfair's mass-market pricing is a race to zero.
- Multi-size variant listings. Same design at 11×14 ($38), 16×20 ($58), 24×30 ($98). The buyer chooses size, the seller captures every conversion the design earns.
- Triptych / set listings. A 3-piece set at $148 sells well as gallery wall styling and has materially better fee math than three single-piece sales.
- Use the $100 Off-Site Ads cap aggressively. A $400 large canvas attributed to Off-Site Ads pays $100 (cap), effectively 25% on that line — but for items above $667, the effective rate drops below 15%.
- Direct supplier relationship. If volume justifies it, moving from Printify to a direct local print supplier can save $4–6 per unit. At 200 sales/month that's $800–1,200 of pure margin.
