Body butter: shea, oils, jar — and Etsy's cut
Body butter is the higher-priced cousin of lip balm in the handmade bath & body category — and the per-unit economics are materially better because the gross is higher. Shea butter and carrier oils are the dominant cost line at $3–5 per jar; glass or plastic jars run $1–2; fragrance pro-rates to under a dollar. The price ceiling is $20–24 retail, which is exactly where Etsy's fee structure works best for this product type.
A $18 body butter jar sale, fully decomposed
$18 jar + $5 shipping = $23 gross. Shea butter $2.50, carrier oils $1.50, fragrance/essential oil $0.75, jar + lid $1.50, label $0.30, real shipping $4.75. Total cost ~$11.30. Etsy fees on the gross:
- Listing fee: $0.20
- Transaction fee (6.5% of $23): $1.50
- Payment processing (3% + $0.25): $0.94
- Off-Site Ads at 15%: $3.45
Etsy total: $6.09 — 26.5% of gross. After cost of goods and shipping: net profit is $23 − $11.30 − $6.09 = $5.61 — about 24.4% net margin on the buyer-facing total.
That's at the typical $18 price point. The same product at $24 (which the market supports for "whipped" or "ultra-rich" framing) clears $8.21 in net — 50% more dollars for the same labor.
The common mistake: matching big-brand bath product pricing
Body butter buyers on Etsy aren't comparing to L'Occitane or Burt's Bees retail. They're comparing to other Etsy handmade shops. Pricing too low confirms commodity positioning and undercuts the "natural, small-batch, handmade" framing that makes this category work at all. A $24 whipped body butter with thoughtful ingredient framing converts as well as a $18 plain version — sometimes better.
The other failure: heat damage in summer shipping. Body butter melts at 90–95°F. Shipping to Arizona in July without cold packs or insulated mailers produces refunds. Most sellers eat 5–10% of summer orders to this; the fix is either seasonal hiatus or cold-pack shipping.
How to fix it
- Price $22–28 for "whipped" or "ultra-rich" framing. Same product, premium positioning. The buyer interested in handmade body butter is paying for the experience, not the cost.
- 3-jar gift sets at $52. Bundles in this category convert as gift purchases. The fee math on a $52 order is dramatically better than three $18 orders.
- Scent variety as the product, not the customization. Pre-built "calm" / "energize" / "sleep" scent collections convert better than "choose your scent" listings.
- Seasonal hiatus for hot zones. Pause or warn buyers in destinations >85°F during summer. Refund cost is worse than a missed sale.
- Opt out of Off-Site Ads under $10k. Body butter customers come heavily from Instagram and clean-beauty communities organically. Etsy paid attribution is rarely the conversion driver.
