Handmade cat toys: $14 retail, the fee math is unforgiving
Handmade cat toys — felt mice, crocheted catnip kickers, fabric-and-feather wands — sit in a price band where Etsy's fee structure does meaningful damage. Felt and fabric are cheap. Catnip is cheap. The labor isn't free, and Etsy's percentage fees plus Off-Site Ads attribution take a quarter of every sale. The category survives on bundling and on the gift-buyer segment that buys 4–6 toys at a time for cat-owning friends.
A $14 handmade cat toy sale, fully decomposed
$14 toy + $4 shipping = $18 gross. Felt + filling + catnip $3, ribbon/feather $1, real shipping $3.75. Total cost ~$7.75. Etsy fees on the gross:
- Listing fee: $0.20
- Transaction fee (6.5% of $18): $1.17
- Payment processing (3% + $0.25): $0.79
- Off-Site Ads at 15%: $2.70
Etsy total: $4.86 — 27% of gross. After cost of goods and shipping: net profit is $18 − $7.75 − $4.86 = $5.39 — about 30% net margin on the buyer-facing total.
At 15 minutes of construction per toy, hourly rate works out to $21.56 — sustainable, but only if the volume cooperates and the seller is comfortable producing 100+ toys per month at that pace.
The common mistake: $4–6 single-toy listings
Many handmade cat toy shops list individual toys at $4–7. At those prices, after fees and shipping, the seller keeps $1–2 per sale. The math doesn't work even at high volume.
The other failure: not bundling for the gift segment. A "cat starter pack" of 4 different toys at $42 is the right format for the gift-buyer who's getting a new-kitten gift for a friend. Same construction cost as 4 separate orders; one set of flat fees; one set of shipping; dramatically better unit economics.
How to fix it
- 4-toy or 6-toy bundles as the flagship. $42 for four, $58 for six. Singles can exist as $8 add-ons but the lead product is the set.
- Subscription off-Etsy. A $24/month "monthly cat toy box" on Cratejoy captures repeat buyers at meaningfully better margins than Etsy retail.
- Catnip-included variants. "Refillable with our organic catnip" listings command a $4–6 premium with $0.50 marginal cost. The cat-parent segment will pay for organic ingredient framing.
- Wholesale to local pet stores / cat cafes. Bulk orders at $5 per toy avoid the Etsy fee stack entirely and pay better per-unit margin than retail.
- Opt out of Off-Site Ads under $10k. Required. The 15% on $14 cat toys is the difference between viable and not.
