Custom pet tags: $18 retail, materials are the smaller line
Custom engraved pet ID tags are one of the higher-margin handmade pet categories on Etsy when priced correctly. Aluminum, brass, or stainless steel blanks run $3–6 wholesale. Engraving takes minutes per tag on a laser or rotary engraver. The product ships in a small envelope at minimal cost. Etsy still takes its 25% cut on the gross — but the structural economics in this category are meaningfully better than soft-good handmade pet products.
A $18 custom pet tag sale, fully decomposed
$18 tag + $3 shipping = $21 gross. Brass/aluminum blank $5, ring + split-ring $0.50, real shipping $2.75. Total cost ~$8.25. Etsy fees on the gross:
- Listing fee: $0.20
- Transaction fee (6.5% of $21): $1.37
- Payment processing (3% + $0.25): $0.88
- Off-Site Ads at 15%: $3.15
Etsy total: $5.60 — 26.7% of gross. After cost of goods and shipping: net profit is $21 − $8.25 − $5.60 = $7.15 — about 34% net margin on the buyer-facing total.
At 8–12 minutes per tag (design + engrave + final polish + envelope), hourly rate works out to $35.75 to $53.62 — among the highest in handmade pet products. The category rewards efficient operators.
The common mistake: matching pet-store kiosk pricing
Pet-store engraving kiosks charge $6–10 for a basic engraved tag. New custom tag sellers benchmark against this and price too low. The Etsy buyer isn't comparing to the kiosk; they're comparing to handmade and design-led shops. A $22 tag with a thoughtful font and clean engraving sells as well as a $16 tag — the buyer interested in handmade is paying for design, not the lowest possible price.
The other failure: single-tag listings with no upsells. A buyer ordering one tag often has a multi-pet household. Listing a "tag for each pet" 2-pack ($32) and 3-pack ($45) captures the buyer who would have ordered separately.
How to fix it
- Price $22–28 for design-led tags. This is the durable Etsy range. Kiosk pricing is the wrong benchmark.
- Multi-pet bundle pricing. 2-pack at $32, 3-pack at $45. Multi-pet households are common and convert as bulk orders.
- Premium material variants. Solid brass ($28) and stainless steel ($24) variants alongside aluminum ($18) capture buyers who want longevity. Material cost differential is small; perception differential is large.
- Pair with a collar. "Tag + matching paracord collar" bundles at $48 are the highest-AOV listings in this category.
- Use the $100 Off-Site Ads cap on multi-pet households. Premium orders crossing the $200 mark effectively pay sub-15% on Off-Site Ads.
- Wholesale to local rescues / pet stores. Bulk orders at $10 per tag avoid the Etsy fee stack and pay materially better per-unit margin.
